What is a shortcode in WordPress?

A shortcode is a small piece of text you put on a page that tells WordPress to “show something special” in that place.

You can think of it like a magic sticker you place on the page. When WordPress sees that sticker, it knows what to show there.

  • Example: Show the training form
  • Example: Show the youth calendar
  • Example: Show the onboarding steps

You do not have to write any computer code. You do not have to design anything complicated. You just put the shortcode where you want the feature to appear. WordPress does the hard work for you.

What does a shortcode look like?

A shortcode usually looks like this:

[training_start]

or like this:

[department_list]

Shortcodes are always inside square brackets like these: [ ].

Explanation for seniors

If you are new to computers or websites, here is a simple way to think about it:

A shortcode is like a small sign you place on a page that tells WordPress:

“Put this special feature right here.”

You do not need to understand how it works behind the scenes. You just copy the shortcode and paste it where you want it. WordPress will take care of the rest.

Explanation for teens

For younger people, you can think of a shortcode like a cheat code or a shortcut. When you drop it onto the page, the feature appears automatically.

Everyday example

Imagine you are setting the table for dinner. Instead of cooking the food again, you place a small card on the table that says:

“Bring out the food.”

The kitchen sees the card and brings the food. You did not cook again; you just placed the card.

That is what a shortcode does. It brings the feature onto the page without you having to build everything yourself.

Why shortcodes are helpful for our churches

Shortcodes make it easy for our churches to:

  • Add training and onboarding steps for leaders and members
  • Show department information like Youth, Missionaries, or Deacons
  • Display forms for sign-ups and contact
  • Show progress bars or other helpful tools

You do not have to be a web expert. With shortcodes, both teens and seniors can help manage the website. It is simple, flexible, and designed to make ministry work easier.
